The skillful use of horn is characteristic of Art Nouveau
jewelry. This pin is a good example of the artist's desire to
turn the most humble and inexpensive of materials into works of
art. This butterfly brooch has the lightness and moody shifts of
color that appealed to the Art Nouveau jeweler. It has the old
"C" clasp which is the earliest type of catch. It measures 3" in width and 1-3/4" in length. The body of the
butterfly raises up 3/4" from the wings as if to fly.
Lovely variations in color and hand-carved marks adorn this
handsome Art Nouveau butterfly made from horn.
