Victorian Vulcanite Brooch
|
|
Back |
This brooch is a beautiful example of Victorian
craftsmanship. It is believed that this piece was given to a woman to commemorate the memory of a husband or a son. It
appears to be mourning jewelry, and its military motif speaks
volumes about the circumstances under which it was given. The brooch has been tested
and found to be made of 10kt. gold. It is also made from vulcanite - a hard, rubber material that has a
tell-tale
burnt-rubber smell when rubbed briskly.
The brooch
measures 2-1/2" in width and 2" in length. It has a silver design in the middle and a ribbon motif on the gold,
with a straight-hinged "C" catch pin on the underside. This is a well-preserved
and lovingly stored item; a beautiful reminder of the past and the
sentimental messages portrayed by jewelry of that era. What a
treasure! |
