Whitby Jet Necklace with Crystals

Back For your consideration is a wonderful faceted Whitby Jet Necklace, c.1800 (late). Jet is a type of highly mineralized wood, largely made up of carbon which imparts a rich black color. It's no longer wood, yet it is not quite petrified either, so it cannot be deemed stone. It is most closely related to coal. The beads in this necklace have a soft, beautiful glow and are very light-weight, and crystal discs separate each bead. All components of this piece have been hand-carved. The necklace has a built-in barrel-style clasp which screws in, hiding the clasp from view. The size of the beads are graduated with the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top. This wonderful mourning Whitby necklace measures 32-1/2" in length and is from the Victorian period.
